Milo
hobbled into the Sanctuary—a beautiful, affectionate, bumbling,
overweight Chocolate Labrador just nine months old with appalling
hip dysplasia. His owners had been advised that he needed a complete
hip replacement*, and as they could not afford to do that they
had decided to put him to sleep unless Happy Dogs could help. They
handed him over to the Charity and immediately we began putting
things right. Getting his weight down prior to the operation was,
to say the least, difficult particularly with a Lab, their love
their food, and with the pain in his hip, exercise was tricky.
But we did it and 2 months later he was ready for the operation.
I must confess it was a terrible
day for me, such a young dog, such major surgery. Then came the
phone call: the operation had
been a great success. Now I had to do my bit with the after care.
One month caged – just out a few minutes at a time for ablutions,
a second month caged with just a few minutes exercise a dozen time
a day gradually building up to more during the third month of caged
rest. Then after almost four months of continual cage rest, he
was able to have a bit of a run off the lead in the field. The
first few days he limped quite badly but that quickly wore off
as the muscles developed and grew strong again. Two months later
he was ready for re-homing and as usual when I need it to happen,
along came to wonderful family who needed him as much as he needed
them. The family took this kind gentle patient loving Labrador
into their hearts and their home. He is now safe a secure and able
to run in the field, on the beach and in the Forest and feel no
pain and I am grateful.
* Cost of surgery in excess of £4,000
