Tilly,
a tiny timid, traumatized rough coated beautiful little Jack Russell,
came to the Sanctuary in August 2007 after being found abandoned
on the A31 Dorchester Bypass. Living here with all the other dogs
over the following months presented no problems for her: she loved
them all. Gradually though very hesitantly she began to trust again,
though I doubted I would ever be able to re-home this mixed up
little creature. The lo and behold, a year after she came a lovely lady arrived
to say she had fallen in love with Tilly and wanted to give her
a chance. After pointing out all the disadvantages of adopting
Tilly and there being no advantages, I finally and with great trepidation
took Tilly to her house and left her on a foster basis with a strict
instructions on how to care for her safely. Almost a week later
came the dreaded phone call: she was lost and, the gate having
been left open, had escaped and was last seen swimming across the
Avon at Christchurch. No one had seen her come out. So many people
helped us search but to no avail and with great sadness I felt
that she must have drowned. Two weeks later, I had a wonderful
phone call—Tilly had
been found by two girls who had enticed her from her
hiding place with food and finally captured her. They had been
due to return home from their holiday on the Saturday but had refused
to go back until she was safe. We all felt such joy that this little
creature had survived and on her arrival back at the Sanctuary
all the other dogs made such a fuss of her greeting her return
with almost with as much joy as ours. Needless to say she will
not be re-homed again but will stay here where she feels safe. The two girls who found her will
always have a special place in my heart for their “love
of a dog” that they would
not give up on. Hopefully next time they come down they will visit
Tilly. I am sure she won’t forget them either.
